Every time you open your mouth to speak, there are three critical pieces at play:
- Who are you talking to?
- What is your relationship to them?
- What do you want to say?
In order to communicate clearly to your community, you must begin with a thorough understanding of who you are and why you do what you do. These are deep questions that sets the necessary foundation.
Secondly, you need to know your audience. If you don’t know their hopes and fears, you won’t be able to even get their attention. If you don’t understand their internal lexicon, your message won’t make sense. If you can’t connect to their heart, you won’t be able to move them.
Finally, once you understand who you are and who you’re talking to, you can begin to craft your own message to them that cuts through the noise, grabs their attention, and connects with their heart.
This is the beginning of our branding process, but whether or not you’re ready for that, take some time to make sure you and your team have processed through these critical questions to craft your own message and reach people.
